Laundry Room Cabinets and Organization

I was so excited to have my parents come to town for my daughter's birthday party a few weekends ago.  It's always great to see them, but having their help around the house is invaluable.

Last summer I shared my laundry room update with you, and although there were many things still undone, it was a much need (and much improved) transformation.  And, as I described in the original post, this room is a "meeting point" in our home.  It is about eight feet wide, but very deep, and contains four doors in this space.  From this room, you can enter the garage, the patio, the kitchen or the sewing room.

This is a photo of what the laundry room looked like when we bought the house in August of 2010.

Last summer, we painted, added new shelves, and made some organizational stations in this room.  I loved it- I really did but knew the day would come when it would be over-hauled again.  This is what it looked like after the first transformation.

Then one day in April, I was browsing Craigslist and stumbled on these amazing cabinets- brand new!- just a few miles from my house.  I couldn't resist.  Although they were meant to be "base" cabinets, I flipped them upside down and made them into wall-mount cabinets.  My father added a strip of crown molding to the top to make it look like one built-in piece.

Most of the basic elements of the room stayed the same, but I did tweak a few places.

Moved my Shark Steam Mop pads out of this blue tub and use it now for dirty clothes.  (My Shark pads and attachments are now inside the cabinets!)

Moved the white wooden yard sale container to near the washer.  It holds detergent, stain remover and dryer sheets now.

I keep my Dyson Vaccuum in the laundry room now.  I absoluetly LOVE this vacuum.  It was my Christmas present, and I couldn't be happier about it.  I haven't found a mess that it won't clean!  I previously kept it in a bedroom closet, but found I was using it all the time because it not only gets the job done, but it is easy to move, quick to clean and works every time.

I added a bulliten board to the space above the peg rack.  It holds coupons and other important info, and mainly keeps clutter off the fridge.  We still have our key holder in this space, too- and that is a great system for our little clan!

This set of four magazine bins from Hobby Lobby has become our "organization station".  I keep one bin for outgoing mail, one for my meal planner/daily planner, one for sunglasses and one for "things to do".  I love this new system and how it works for our family!  It sits on top of the DVD cabinet that I converted to shoe storage for my kids- this system still works great!

I kept our mop/broom/Shark Mop holder behind the kitchen door- still LOVE this gadget!

I moved my felt ruffle wreath to above the sink.

And kept my wall-mount hanging things.  Absolutely love these, too!  And I really love the fact that I can flip them up when I don't plan on using them!  I have hung many heavy clothes on these things and never had a problem with them snapping or even starting to break.  They seriously are amazing.

I can't believe how much more open it seems now that the shelves are gone.  The cabinets really give it a finished look and make it seem larger, too.  So grateful for Craigslist finds, my dad, my husband, and a lot of sweat!  Maybe now that enormous load of dirty clothes won't seem to bad!

What rooms have you updated lately?  Anyone got a home remodel project going on this holiday weekend?

Now, on to freezer cooking....

Remember my partially disasterous recent freezer cooking day?

Well, I am happy to report that I had a successful one today! I brushed my teeth, didn't spill anything, and no major catastrophies!

Here's my report from the day:

Homemade bread x 2 loaves

I use the recipe found on my friend Tonya's blog, because it's fool proof. I was never a bread baker until about two years ago, when a few ladies from church hosted a "bread baking" course. Since then, I've been sold. The recipe was actually developed by our friend Gabriele, who is absolutely amazing in the kitchen, and on the sewing machine. She is a wealth of homemaking knowledge!

Broccoli, Rice and Cheese Casserole

I use the recipe from MoneySavingMom's blog, and this is to be taken to a family this evening.  I love taking meals to people when they are hurting, or even when they are not- I think sharing a meal with someone is such a practical way to minister.  This meal was set up by the room mother of John Mark's class- a fellow classmate's mother was just diagnosed with breast cancer.  She had her surgery a week or so ago and the class is taking turns bringing her dinner.

I was able to find these disposable pans with lids at Dollar Tree.  I think they are a seasonal item, so if you need some, stock up like I did!

Roasted Veggies

This is also for the meal I am providing tonight.  I combined zucchini, carrots and yellow pepper and seasoned with garlic salt.    Roast in the oven for about 30 minutes- yum!

Chicken and Rice

This is one of our family's favorites.  I have no idea where I originally got this recipe, but we absolutely love it.

I'll post the recipe below, but if you know of the original source, please let me know so I can give credit where it's due!

1 1/2 c chicken, cooked and diced
1 1/2 c rice, cooked (I use Aldi brown rice)
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 T lemon juice
3/4 cup mayo
3/4 cu chicken broth + extra to cook rice
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1 c celery, diced
1/2 c slivered almonds
Top with cheese, if desired

Cook chicken and rice.  (I usually cook and shred my chicken using this method- such a time saver!)  Combine everything in large bowl.  Pour into greased 9x13 pan and bake at 400 for 30-40 minutes.

No Bake Energy Bites

These are so yummy!  Recipe can be found here, and I could go on and on about how I love these- all natural sugars (minus the chocolate chips, which can be lessened or omitted), flaxseed, easy to make with kids, freeze-able....  our family really loves these things!  It tastes even better with homemade vanilla, too!

And now my husband is on his way home, he will deliver the meal to our friends, and I'm off to work!  It's been a full day, but every day is full of amazing moments and blessings.

Freezer Paper Onesies Baby Shower

This past weekend I flew to Alabama for a very special reason- to see my sister who is expecting her first baby this fall.  And, I couldn't just see her without a celebration, so I joined some friends of hers and we crafted, ate, shared, prayed and partied!

Freezer paper onesies are such a simple way to add a craft to a baby shower or even a way to add a no-sew handmade item to a baby gift.  I originally posted about freezer paper onesies here, which has become one of my most popular posts.  It has been featured on countless blogs and sites and I've enjoyed hearing your stories and feedback about your experiences.

You only need a few basic supplies for this project:
  1. Onesies
  2. Freezer Paper
  3. Acrylic Paint
  4. Paint Brushes
  5. Posterboard
  6. Iron
  7. Washer and Dryer
Here's the short instructions, but read further if you want my details and tips.
  1. Wash onesies.
  2. Cut out shapes, images or words from freezer paper.
  3. Iron freezer paper onto onesies (no steam) shiny side down.
  4. Insert posterboard into onesies.
  5. Use acrylic paint to add color to onesies inside the stencil.
  6. Let paint dry and remove stencil after it is dry.
  7. Put onesies in the dryer.
  8. Wash as usual.
Long Version with details tips and tricks:

Originally, I cut out the stencils by hand with an Exacto Knife, but this time, I chose an easier route.  I do not have a Cricut or Silhouette, so I began brainstorming ideas about how to cut out shapes without these helpful tools, and without doing them all by hand!  My sister had an amazing idea- an Ellison Press!

An Ellison Press is a tool that is owned by most schools, some libraries and teacher resource stores.  The main part is the press, and each facility purchases individual "dies" or "blocks" which contain shapes, letters, numbers or images.

I called my son's school and kindly asked if I could use the Ellison Press if I brought my own paper.  They graciously agreed, and I was able to cut nearly 50 images from freezer paper in less than 30 minutes.  It saved me so much time!

Once I got home, my husband and I ironed the freezer paper (shiny side down) onto the onesies to create the stencil.  I packed 30 onesies with freezer paper iron-ons into my suitcase and headed to Alabama, hoping that security wouldn't open my suitcase and wonder how crazy I must be!

Ironing tips:  Make sure to set your iron to no-steam.  Also make sure to move the iron slowly over the edges of the stencil.  It is super-important to get a good strong seal between the stencil and the onesie, particularly for where they meet.  This will help your paint to not run under the onesies and keep your image krisp.

I chose to use the negative space on some of the onesies, so I used a circle cutting tool to cut a large circle and placed the Ellison Press image inside the circle.  This was a nice twist on the onesies- so they weren't all just an image on a onesie.

At the baby celebration, I hung the onesies on a line of twine with clothespins and set out paint.

I did insert a piece of posterboard inside each onesie.  This is important because it keeps the paint from bleeding through to the back of the onesie.  Keep the paper in the onesie until the paint is fully dry.

I chose to put the paint in clear plastic cups.  Originally, I thought I would put it on paper plates but cups seemed to be a much better option for mess and clean-up.  I use acrylic paint, and although many sites suggest using textile medium, I do not use that.  I tried, but it made the paint very runny and honestly, my onesies are just as soft without the textile medium.

As guests arrived, they selected a onesie and a paint color.

My sister really wanted to know who painted each onesie, so I added a blue circle tag to each one for guests to write their name.

Using foam brushes, each guest painted inside the stencil.

Some painted with a single color, and others used more than one color.

Once all the onesies were painted, they were hung up on the line and left to dry while we socialized, ate and partied.

After we were done with the indoor festivities, I snuck back out onto the patio and started removing the stencils.  As people realized what I was doing, they were shocked at how amazing the onesies looked.  They couldn't believe they had painted such a great image onto baby clothes.  Most of all, my sister loved them and baby boy is so excited about his new onesie wardrobe!

Once we got home, I dried the onesies in the dryer, and then washed and dried them all.  The paint is soft, not stiff, and the colors are bright and vibrant.

Would you believe that 90% of these onesies started as white?  I dyed the orange, green and yellow onesies at my house prior to ironing on the stencils.  I'll share more about how I dyed them and some tips later this week.

Anyone else experimented with freezer paper stenciling?  What have you done and what are your tips?
