Flower Power Bibs

I recently wrote about the Tie Bib I made for boys, and I forgot that I never showed you my Flower Power bib for girls!

So, this bib is made of upcycled jeans on one side, and fabric on another.  So, it is totally reversible!

I used the denim corsage pattern found here for the flower, and put a covered button in the middle.  The entire flower pins on the bib, so it can easily be removed for reversing the bib or for washing.

I completely sold out of these bibs at the Handmade Holiday Open House back in December, but plan on making more soon!

The Tie Bib

This bib is made from the same pattern I designed for the Bandana Bib.  It's corduroy on one side, with a tie embellished, and solid plaid on the other.  I love this plaid fabric- it looks so manly and fits this bib perfectly.

This bib has a snap closure and is large enough for an baby who is eating solids (i.e., too large for a newborn drooler).
I've been on a sewing marathon lately- spending nearly every free minute sewing- to prepare for the Handmade Holiday Open House.  I have four of these bibs to sell, in addition to many other non-baby items.

The Bapron

Last week I had two baby showers to attend or send a gift to, and I was ecstatic to find this online tutorial and free pattern for the Bapron (AKA Baby Apron).

This is a full-coverage bib for infants and toddlers, providing arm holes and coverage over the shoulder.  It is very difficult for the feisty child to remove.  :)  My daughter (pictured above) is a small 2 1/2 year old (about 25 lbs), but I imagine this would fit children from about 6 months to 25 - 30 lbs.  Oh, how I wish I had learned of these about four years ago!

Not only is it a wonderful bib, it's fairly easy to make.  I was able to make one in about 25 minutes after I made the first one (since it always takes longer the first time you do something!).

It's fairly frugal, too.  Here's the price breakdown that I developed:

1 package of bias tape: $2 (or less with coupon)
1 hand towel (you will be able to make two bibs from one towel):  $1/towel, or $0.50 per bib
Flannel:  free from your scrap stash, or less than $1 if bought new
Thread and sewing machine
Total:  $3.50 or less per bib

I made quite a variety of bibs last week since I was making for one baby and one baby girl.  The dinosaur print is Dino Dudes from Michael Miller.

I chose to back mine with a tericloth towel, but you could use a second piece of flannel, denim, corduroy, or anything you wanted, really.

You could also choose to make your own bias tape.  I have done this before, but used packaged for the sake of convenience in this case.  Excellent instructions on how to make your own bias tape are here.

If you choose to put another flannel or cotton print on the back, the bibs are actually reversible.  I would recommend adding a layer of batting in between to increase absorbency for the messy meals.

I just can't say enough about how much I loved these bibs!  I am certain I will be making more for baby gifts in the future!

Raggedy Ann and Andy Vintage Vinyl Bib

I stumbled on a yard sale a few weeks ago and saw vintage Raggedy Ann and Andy (circa 1973) vinyl lying on a table.  I grabbed it, paid ONE DOLLAR for it, and begin brainstorming ideas.

Here's what emerged from the sewing room tonight....

This is a vinyl baby bib.  It's wipe-down or machine washable, and hang dry.  It's backed with red fabric with a tiny white swirl- it blends so perfectly with these all-time favorite rag dolls.

Bandana Bib

I guess I'm on a bandana kick these days, because this bib emerged from my sewing room last week!  I love cutting up old jeans and repurposing them for new uses.  These jeans were some of my maternity clothes that just never fit right.  I thought of consigning them, but then decided it would be more fun to cut them up.  The red fabric was from my Granny's stash, which she generously lets me raid each time I make a visit.

A velcro closure.  I really want to do snaps, but haven't been able to master it yet.  My cousin-in-law, Dalila, has given me some tips on punching snaps into denim, so I need to attempt it again.

I purposefully allowed the inseam to be on the bib.  I think it adds character.

The back, or the front.  It's reversible!

Bibs and Burp Cloths

I recently made a set of bibs and burp cloths for my friend Steph, to give to some new mommies she knew.  This is the vintage bib that I featured here, with the fabric flower from here.

This fabric was from a vintage tablecloth.... I just love the bright colors.  I backed the bib with a tericloth towel for easy cleanup and maximum absorbency.
The burp cloth is primarily yellow flannel, but then has a diagonal swatch of the vintage fabric on the bottom.

I love this pink fabric from Michael Miller too!  Stephanie picked it out when she was pregnant with her daughter, and I made a sling for her.

Vintage Baby Bib

What happens when you merge a vintage table cloth with a white bath towel?

This....

Thanks, Delilah, for helping me with the snaps!  I love it!

This fabric flower was so easy to make!
I adapted it a little by finishing off the edges and putting a button in the center.

This bib is now for sale in my etsy shop and will be on display at the OGC Arts and Crafts show this Sunday night.

Ten Common (and Not-So-Common) Places to Find Items for Children's Consignment Sales

Are you all fully convinced to consign this spring?  Yesterday I shared the reasons I'm consigning this spring, and I hope you'll join me in such an endeavor.  But perhaps you're not fully convinced because you don't have anything to consign.  Today's topic is for you!  Search these ten place,s and I guarantee you'll have a box (or two, or three!) of items ready to go.
1.  Kid's Closets.  Let's start with the obvious, shall we?  :)  Clothing items contribute to more than half of a consignment sale's inventory.  Browse your children's closets and remove any items that they no longer need.  Don't forget the shoes!

2.  Children's Bedrooms.  Another obvious one.  My first consignment sale, I only sold clothes.  I had no idea that I should go beyond the closet to the non-clothing items that were nearly new.  My second sale, over half of my profits were from items such as toys, puzzles and books.

3.  Patio and Outdoor Play Area.  We have a large screened in patio at our home and toys galore in this area.  Items such as ride-on toys and preschool sports equipment are high dollar items at consignment sales.

4.  DVD Cabinet.  Another area I overlooked for years.  Most consignment sales no longer accept VHS tapes, but DVDs and CDs are among the "most-wanted" items for shoppers.

5.  Grandma's House.  As you're purging your own home, ask grandparents to look through their stash of toys, books and DVDs.  I find that items at Grandma's house are in better condition and more likely to have all the original pieces - making it a candidate for consignment.

6.  Garage.  If your garage is a "catch all" area like mine, you may find a plethora of items there.  Throughout the year, I'll box up items and label them for consignment, but then forget them if I don't do a thorough check of the garage before sale time.

7.  Kitchen.  Items such as baby bottles, unopened (and within expiration date) cans of formula, toddler plates, cups, and utensils are small items that can add to your grand total at a consignment sale.  Don't forget the bib drawer, too!

8.  Linen Closet.  Don't forget this high-dollar stash in your home!  Crib bedding, toddler sheets, and baby bath items are all qualifying items.

9.  Bathroom.  I hope I'm not alone in this, but my kids have so many bath toys they can hardly bathe in the tub!  This is an often overlooked area of the home, and since the toys are in soap and water, they should be clean, right?  :)

10.  Your Own Closet.  If you've recently had a baby, don't forget about consigning your own maternity clothes and nursing tops.  Most consignment sales won't allow you to try on items, so make sure your clothes have a clear size marked on the tag.  I find that dresses, jeans and skirts do best at these sales.

Well, if you've searched all ten of those places you likely have several boxes ready to clean, prepare, tag and  consign.  You better get busy!

See you later in the week for a discussion on why your consignment sale needs more than just your items- they need you as a volunteer!

Ruffle Clutch from Vintage Sheets

I just love the ladies over at Sew, Mama, Sew!  If you're a new sewer, it's a website chocked full of helpful tips, tutorials and information to get you started.  Even if you are more of a novice, you'll fall in love with their site quickly as their themed months are fun to follow and full of creativity.

The latest challenge on the blog is the Summer Reinvention Challenge.  Although today is the last day, I decided to enter with my Ruffle Clutch made from Vintage Sheets.

This clutch is made from Ali Foster's Ruffle Clutch pattern, which is super easy and quick to make.  I just love Ali's patterns and the simplicity they provide.

It has a magnetic snap closure and is roomy and spacious enough for all the needed essentials.  Interfacing makes it sturdy but not stiff.

Here's a couple of other "Reinvention" projects I've done:
Men's Dress Shirt Repurposed to Apron
Girl's Dress Upcycled from a Man's Shirt
Shirred Skirt from Vintage Sheet
Flower Power Bibs
Shirred Beach Towel Dress

Gift for a Christmas Baby Girl

My husband has a life-long friend who became a father over Christmas weekend.  I didn't think the baby girl wasn't due until mid-January, so I had postponed making her gift until after Christmas.  I ran to the sewing room when hubby got the text that Christmas Baby Girl was on her way!  Since this family lives up north (when you live in Florida, almost everything is north!), I sent some things that may help with the frigid temperatures!

A Rice Warmer for Mommy, Burp Cloths, Leg Warmers, and a Car Seat Canopy. I also added a bib at the last minute (after I took this photo!).

A close up of the Car Seat Canopy.  I'll be posting soon about how I learned to make my own labels and save tons of $$$!

I've had this butterfly fabric for a few months, waiting for the right occasion to use it.  I hope this new mommy and baby (and daddy, too!) love it as much as I do.

Car Seat Canopies are an excellent baby gift!  I have made TONS and everyone LOVES them!  Click here to order one.

The Perfect Clutch

For weeks, I've been dreaming of sewing one of these.  I've had the idea in my head, but hadn't fleshed out all the details.  Thankfully this girl had already done the hard work.  I made my clutch similar to hers, but changed a few things up a bit.  Thinking of adding a wrist strap in the future.

I added this fabric flower, which I first put on this bib a while back.  I also used a snap closure since I didn't have any magnetic closures on hand.
I love the POP of pink inside this clutch!  It's the perfect size for bills, coupons, cell phone, notes, etc.

As always, your kind and honest feedback is appreciated and valued.  Either click one of the responses below or leave a comment with your thoughts.

Purse from a Vintage Pillowcase

I made this purse over the Thanksgiving weekend.  It's from a vintage pillowcase that I picked up at an estate sale for $1.  I love the diagonal plaid lines and the bold colors in this print.

I put this charming fabric flower on the purse with a safety pin, so it can be removed for washing or if you want to wear it with another purse or outfit.  It's the same fabric flower I used for the vintage bib I made here.
This bag is fully lined with natural colored muslin fabric.

This bag, along with a few other new items, is now for sale in my Etsy Shop.
